Working holidays are an ideal opportunity for an enjoyable and rewarding break where you can get to know and work with our thriving community.

"I had an amazing time during my working visit. Everyone was really down to earth and friendly. I loved the classes on Buddhism and was greatly inspired to see a community that was striving to put the teachings into practice. Plus, the other working visitors were great fun too." - A recent working visitor

Just south of the Lake District, Conishead priory is beautifully situated in many acres of woodland and gardens on the shores of Morecambe Bay. The beach is only a five minute walk from the Priory through mature woodland which provides a quiet and reflective environment.

The local town of Ulverston is well known for its speciality shops and old world atmosphere. There is a Saturday market and even a Laurel and Hardy museum (Stan Laurel was born in Ulverston).

Along the coast road towards Barrow, there is an ancient stone circle where you can take in the stunning views across Morecombe Bay. The nearest Lake is Coniston, only a half hour drive away. There are many other tourist attractions nearby.

What to expect...

The work is varied and could include cooking, gardening, officework, decorating etc. We also have various building projects on the go at any one time that you could get involved in. We are always interested to hear about any specific skills you may be able to offer.

You will start work at 9am (Monday). The day is broken up by mealtimes and tea breaks. In the evenings you are welcome to attend any of the classes and meditations.

On your days off (Saturday and Sunday) you have the chance to explore the beautiful countryside and surrounding area or just relax in the friendly atmosphere of the centre.

You are requested to arrive before 8pm, supper is served at 6.30pm. Stays are usually for one week depending on the work available.

Our Spiritual Programme

As a visitor you are welcome to take part in the spiritual activities at Manjushri Centre. In the evenings you can attend classes on Buddhist thought and meditation or you can join in with our daily prayers in the temple. At weekends we hold Prayers for World Peace and regular weekend Meditation Retreats. These classes are all free to working visitors. Please note there are no classes during term breaks.

Prices

All permanent residents at Manjushri Centre are asked to cover costs for their food and use of the facilities, as well as accommodation. Many also work full time for the Centre.

In line with this, working visitors are asked to contrinute towards the cost of their stay.

Full board accommodation, including all meals, is only £50 a week, and only £40 for students.

Food and accommodation

All meals are vegetarian including eggs and dairy products.

We offer comfortable dormitory accommodation - all you need to do is bring a sleeping bag, and if possible, work clothes and boots.
